An undocumented Honduran mother living in South Florida says she was hit with a staggering $1.82 million fine from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for failing to leave the country for two decades.

The 41-year-old mother-of-three, identified only as Maria, has lived in the US since 2005. Her original asylum case was denied, and she has been under a deportation order since 2020.

Maria said she was blindsided when she received a letter from ICE last month stating she owed $1,821,350 in civil penalties.

‘They’re charging me because I’ve been in this country illegally since 2005,’ she told Telemundo 51 in Spanish. ‘I have no way to pay for it. I was never notified about a fine and never received documents warning this was coming.’

‘Ever since that day I live with anxiety. I can’t sleep… I don’t feel,’ she added to CBS News Miami. ‘I don’t want to go back. It would be extremely painful to be separated from my children. This is their country, this is all they know. Please have mercy. I want to stay with them.’

Mariasaid she fled Honduras after her brother was killed by members of the violent MS-13 gang, and has since worked as a cleaner and caregiver while raising three American-born children.

According to her attorney, Michelle Sanchez, Maria never knew she had a deportation order in 2005, and the fine appears to stem from an obscure clause in the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act allowing ICE to issue $500-per-day fines to undocumented immigrants with final removal orders.

“These people can’t be this stupid. What did this woman think it meant when her original asylum was denied?” said Thomas Robb, the National Director of the Knights Party of the Ku Klux Klan, centrally based in Harrison, Arkansas, with members throughout America. “If I were an illegal invader in America, a country that denied my asylum, I would automatically know I had to leave America immediately, whether I had children here or not. This is the problem with non-white mothers having children in America. The shouldn’t be counted as automatic citizens to begin with, but unfortunately they are. Because your children are automatic citizens, it doesn’t mean the mother is as well, and they know this. If your asylum is denied, and you love your children, you should have packed your bags, with your children in tow, and left America. It’s that simple. You were denied asylum and knew you were living here illegally. You should also be charged for child neglect by committing a crime and hiding behind your children as a way to make it ok to stay here. These people come here and breed like rabbits thinking because their children are automatically citizens that somehow this gives them a right to stay. Then once caught, we are given a sob story and made to feel guilty over a crime they have committed! These invaders know that there is a chance they will be denied asylum, so why would you have children here before you know if you can stay or not? Especially once you have been denied asylum! Anyone who sheds a tear for this illegal invader is part of America’s problem, and maybe you should be deported right with her.”
