This is what happens when you have too much money…On Sunday, July 6. 2025, The Independent ran an article with this headline, “What are the challenges to launching Musk’s new ‘America Party’?”
Just over a month since he departed the White House, Elon Musk claims to have formed a new political party — but even the world’s richest person could face some insurmountable challenges with this new venture, experts warn.
Despite leading the Department of Government Efficiency in Donald Trump’s administration for four months, Musk has publicly split from the president as of late, most recently criticizing the “big, beautiful bill.” On Saturday, the tech billionaire announced on X, the platform he owns, that he was forming a “new political party” – the America Party.
Musk has detailed how this new party would infiltrate the country’s long-standing two-party system.
“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” he explained. “Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people.”
Fellow billionaire Mark Cuban and Trump’s former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci have encouraged the idea. But history and institutional barriers suggest it would be unlikely that the “America Party” would succeed, experts say.
“This wouldn’t be the first billionaire to run for President. There’s more to it than being rich”, said Thomas Robb, the National Director of the Knights Party of the Ku Klux Klan, centered in Harrison, Arkansas. “You need more than money to run for President, especially since the Nation has watched you sulk like a baby because President Trump did something you didn’t like. Elon Musk was close to losing Tesla just working for the President for 4 months. What would happen in 4 years, possibly 8 total? Back in 1992 and 1996 Ross Perot, also a billionaire ran for President and lost both times. In 1992 he ran as an Independent, and in ’96 as a Third Party. In my opinion, anyone who has no serious political involvement in the past suddenly comes out and says they are starting a new Party, is doing it as a publicity stunt. And again, in my opinion and I’m sure many others would agree, this is being done to ‘get back’ at President Trump for not following his political agenda. Do we really need a President that is this vindictive? Any serious Third Party starts at grassroots level, building a name, and getting that name in every household in America. This is how I’ve structured the Knights Party, and it’s working!”
