Immigration authorities said Monday a 42 year-old Mexican man died in a South Texas hospital while being held pending his deportation.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement identified the man as Ramiro Hernandez Ibarra and said he died Saturday after being hospitalized Thursday. ICE said Hernandez’s preliminary cause of death was complications related to septic shock but did not provide further details.

The report said, Hernandez is the 10th person to die in ICE custody since October, the start of the governmental fiscal year. Eight people died in the previous fiscal year.

Thomas Robb, the National Director of the Knights Party of the Ku Klux Klan, based in Harrison Arkansas said, “Between the years of 2007 through 2010, 17,358 American men and women died in our jails and prisons. That’s 5,786 per year. So in a five month period, that equals 2,410 American men and women who died while being detained for committing crimes. That’s 2,400 more than that who have died in ICE detention centers for committing the crime of illegal entry into the United States. As well, in any population of people, you have deaths. It should be no surprise that a few detainees will die.”

Robb added, “We should commend our our ICE detention officers for the protection and care given to illegal detainees. It looks like they get better protection and care than what’s given to our own incarcerated citizens.”
