Donald Trump has been slammed for “speaking like a dictator” as he appeared to suggest he is now above the law when referencing the French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte.
“He who saves his country does not violate any Law,” the president wrote on Truth Social and X. The quote is often attributed to Napoleon, who seized political power in a coup before crowning himself emperor in 1804 and waging war on coalitions of European nations.
The official account of the White House also shared the message on X alongside the image of Trump intensely staring into a camera, which was released as his official portrait as the 47th president. It comes after several of Trump and Elon Musk’s attempts to upend the federal government have been blocked by judges as lawsuits accuse the president of overstepping his constitutional authority.
His controversial remark came 24 hours after a judge blocked members of DOGE from accessing sensitive US Treasury Department systems. At the same time, Musk has called for “an immediate wave of judicial impeachments” and Trump said during an Oval Office news briefing with the Space X Founder: “Maybe we have to look at the judges because I think that’s a very serious violation.”
House Republicans have already started taking action as they plan to introduce articles of impeachment against at least two of the federal judges who’ve blocked Trump’s measures. Rep. Andrew Clyde is working on articles of impeachment against U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell Jr. after he ordered the Trump administration to lift its federal spending freeze.
Rep. Eli Crane has also said he plans to introduce articles of impeachment against District Court Judge Paul Engelmayer, who blocked DOGE from accessing Treasury records. Trump’s comments suggesting he is above the law have been widely condemned.
