Excuse me, who gets to pray in school? On Wednesday, April 15. 2026 The Daily Wire published an article headlined, “School Helped Organize Muslim Prayer And Now It’s Putting The First Amendment To The Test.”
Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti accused a Nashville public school of “promoting particular religious viewpoints” through its accommodation of Muslim students during Ramadan, saying the school crossed the line from allowing religious exercise to actively facilitating it.
In a Tuesday interview with the Tennessee Star, Skrmetti responded to reports that a Metro Nashville Public Schools employee set up a dedicated Islamic prayer room at John Overton High School and encouraged Muslim students to skip class to use it.
“Free exercise says the government can’t stop you from practicing your religion,” Skrmetti explained. “The establishment clause, as interpreted, and as we hear about every time the legislature tries to do anything these days, says that the state can’t … participate in promoting particular religious viewpoints.”
John Overton High School, according to a report from the Nashville Banner, permitted over 80 students to skip class daily during Ramadan prayer sessions, in addition to separate “food-free” classrooms for fasting students and the aforementioned dedicated prayer rooms. Outside of the month of Ramadan, students are reportedly permitted to leave school grounds once a month to pray.
“So if the school is dedicating resources to something, that’s a very different situation than if the students are self-organizing,” Skrmetti added. “I look at it as an attempt to propagandize and proselytize [non-Muslim] students. That’s my view.”
“This is a big issue here, American Christian kids aren’t allowed to pray in school, but enemies of Christians are?” said Thomas Robb, National Director of the Knights Party of the Ku Klux Klan and Pastor of the Christian Revival Center both based in Harrison, Arkansas with members throughout America. “Not only are Christian kids not allowed to pray in school, but even adult Christians have to hide to pray because it may offend someone, and it’s usually Muslims that do the complaining. Today in America we’re told we can’t pray in public, we can’t celebrate Christian holidays openly, such as Christmas because the word Christ offends Jews and Mulims alike, but Christian children are supposed accommodate Muslim childrens holidays like Ramadan? As far as I’m concerned, and many others feel likewise, if we offend anyone by celebrating Christian holidays and other Christian practices in our White Christian country, then maybe you don’t belong here. Believe me, many wouldn’t be offended if you left. I’d like to see what would happen if we, as Christians, went to a non-christian country and demand that we be accomodated with our Christian practices, or told them their religion offended us. America needs a good sweeping to rid itself of anyone who we offend as Christians. It’s time to take our White, Christian country back!”
