Tuesday, April 21st, The Miami Herald reported, “More Than A Million Americans Won’t Get Stimulus Money Because They Married Immigrants.”
The article states that more than one million Americans won’t get a coronavirus stimulus check because they’re married to immigrants who don’t have Social Security numbers.
Under the CARES Act, individuals earning up to $75,000 will get $1,200, plus $500 for dependents under the age 17.
But families that file taxes with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), which the IRS gives to workers who don’t have Social Security numbers, won’t get a stimulus check unless a spouse is part of the U.S. Armed Forces. That means that if you’re a U.S. citizen but file taxes jointly with a spouse who doesn’t have a Social Security number, you also won’t get a payment.
There are about 1.2 million Immigrants who don’t have legal status, that are married to U.S. citizens according to the Migration Policy Institute.
Thomas Robb, the National Director of the Knights Party based in Harrison Arkansas said, “From the beginning, the CARES Act was created to help American citizens stimulate our crashing economy. It stated plainly this money was being released to American citizens, and Illegal Aliens were not included. If your living in America without a Social Security number, that means you do not have legal status in America. In other words, you’re an Illegal Alien and therefore do not qualify. That should be pretty simple to understand. If you don’t like our system – you can always go home!”
