Surprise? Um, not really. “Student who says she is illiterate, despite graduating with honors, sues Connecticut school district.” This was a headline of an article published by the New York Post over this past weekend.
A Connecticut honors student is suing her school district, saying she is illiterate.
Despite graduating from Hartford Public High School in June with honors and getting a scholarship to the University of Connecticut, Aleysha Ortiz is claiming she cannot read or write.
The 19-year-old, who spent 12 years in the Hartford public school district, testified at a May city council meeting, explaining her unique situation and how the educational system failed her.
“I decided, they [the school] had 12 years,” Ortiz, a native of Puerto Rico, told CNN. “Now it’s my time.”
According to her lawsuit, she began having problems with “letter, sound and number recognition” as early as first grade, and because those issues were not addressed, she began acting out in school.
“I was the bad child,” she told the outlet.
When she was in 6th grade, she was reading at a mere kindergarten or first-grade level, Ortiz alleges.
When Ortiz was a sophomore at Hartford Public High School, Santiago was assigned as her special education teacher and case manager.
“I question the motive here.” said Thomas Robb, the National Director of the Knights Party of the Ku Klux Klan, based out of Harrison, Arkansas. “Is this young lady just trying to make a buck, or is she truly upset that she can’t read or write? I ask myself, ‘Why didn’t she bring this up while she was still in school? Having a Special Ed teacher, was she even capable of achieving a higher education? Those are all worthy questions, but the Public School System have themselves to blame. Maybe not the teacher, but the School District itself. About a year ago, I read where a black girl in Baltimore Maryland graduated and couldn’t read or write. In that case the parents sued. I don’t remember what the outcome was, but this isn’t the first instance of this. This is what happens when schools are told to dumb the White kids down so the non-white kids can look smarter. Teachers are told not to fail any of their students, regardless of educational capabilities. It would be like a 100 meter dash, where nobody can lose. Pretty soon, the fast runners will just walk the race. Why wear yourself out when everyone gets the gold medal? When it gets to the point every student gets passing grades regardless of their effort, the smart children just give up. They quit striving to reach higher educational capabilities. That’s why I said I wonder the motive here. Is this girl actually smart enough to collect on a lawsuit, or is she the by product of today’s education system?
