Wednesday April 29th the National Review ran the following headline “California’s Ammo Background Checks Misfire.”
‘Criminals, tyrants, and terrorists don’t do background checks,’ said the judge who blocked the law.
California’s attempts to discourage gun ownership hit a bump Thursday. U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez granted a preliminary injunction that stopped the state from enforcing its background checks on ammunition purchases. The initiative, which was spearheaded by Gavin Newsom when he was the lieutenant governor, passed in 2016 with 63 percent of the vote.
The background checks have failed miserably, succeeding only in preventing law-abiding citizens from buying ammunition. Between July 2019 and January 2020, 101,047 non-prohibited Californians were prevented from buying bullets. By contrast, just 188 prohibited people were denied. That means that for every prohibited person whose purchase was rejected, 537 law-abiding citizens were denied.
The National Director of the Knights Party, based in Harrison Arkansas, Thomas Robb said, “This is a ploy to go around the attempts at stripping American citizens of their constitutionally protected God given right to bear arms. This is happening even more, on a larger scale under the guise of a COVID-19 pandemic. Places like Pennsylvania, where a lawmaker introduced a bill that would require the purchase of a permit costing no more than $50 to purchase ammunition. American’s are having their attention taken away from what is really going on. You can’t pick up a newspaper without seeing Covid-19 in the headline, and you can’t turn on your TV without hearing something about COVID-19 within the first 30 seconds of turning it on. American’s need to start paying attention to what their local lawmakers are doing right now, because when this Chinese Virus blows over, American’s are going to be wondering what happened to their rights.”
