Yerlianny Romero, 28, was wounded by gunmen who later crashed into a police car, injuring four officers, officials say. A migrant man also was shot.
Yerlianny Romero says she was standing outside the Grand Crossing police station with her young son in her arms when gunmen rolled up in a Jeep Grand Cherokee and started shooting.
Romero, 28, a Venezuelan asylum-seeker who has been living temporarily at the South Side police station, was wounded in the buttocks. A man, also a migrant from Venezuela, got hit in his right thigh, police said.
Romero said she’d been in Chicago for only a week when she was shot Saturday afternoon.
“He started crying and screaming,” Romero, speaking in Spanish, said of her son in an interview with Telemundo Chicago.
The 24-year-old migrant who also was shot outside the police station told Telemundo the bullet remains lodged in his leg and that the wound aches in cold weather. He says he has to go inside the police station to get warm for the pain to subside.
“I don’t know why they shot,” said the man, who was using crutches and asked not to be identified by name.
“Welcome to America!”, said Thomas Robb, the National Director of the Knights Party of the Ku Klux Klan, centrally based in Harrison, Arkansas. “America today is just a shell of it’s former glory. These non-white people invading our nation say they’re fleeing their own countries because they live in fear, their government mistreats them, and their streets aren’t safe to walk on. This all sounds familiar doesn’t it? It should, because these descriptions sound like America too! We as White, Christian, American citizens live in fear every day. Our government mistreats us on a daily basis, and depending where you live, America’s streets are full of all different kinds of things to fear. These illegal invaders are finding out quickly that just because our government invited them here, American citizens don’t like paying for them to destroy what’s left of America. Now don’t misquote me, ‘I DO NOT CONDONE VIGILANTE JUSTICE’, but do these stories like this make me feel pity for these invaders? Absolutely not. The only difference between America and all these other 3rd world countries is that our government pays them to destroy America, and in reality, our government isn’t paying these people, we as tax payers are, so excuse us if some of us don’t welcome you. Some of us didn’t invite you. And some of us want you deported!”
